a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on August 5, 1914.

he was transferred to the 27th Infantry.He received a promotion to Captain on May 15, 1917.
On August 5, 1917 Buckner was offered the temporary rank of Major in the Signal Corps which he accepted on
September 27 of that year.
